Chapter 13 - NINE MINUTES

Rachel called the bank from the sidewalk while sirens washed the block in red light.

“Freeze every outgoing account tied to Northstar. Court order is being filed now.”

The bank refused.

The transfer had valid credentials, a recognized security token, and two internal approvals.

“Two?” Damian snapped.

Marcus opened the authorization screen.

Damian’s forged approval was first.

The second belonged to Elena Reyes.

Elena stared at it. “I don’t even have authority over that account.”

“You do now,” Rachel said grimly. “Someone added you as an emergency household fiduciary three weeks ago.”

Vanessa had built the trap perfectly: steal Damian’s money, make Elena legally visible, then let the paper trail point at her.

Seven minutes.

Elena suddenly remembered something.

“The ledger page. Next to my name there was a number.”

Marcus pulled the scanned image from the cloud backup.

Not a transfer amount.

A phone number.

Rachel dialed it.

A private banking fraud officer answered.

Vanessa had listed that officer as the required verbal verifier for any emergency fiduciary change.

He checked the file, heard Elena deny ever consenting, and froze the transfer pending review.

The timer stopped at eleven seconds.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus’s radio cracked.

“Owen Hale in custody.”

Elena closed her eyes.

For the first time all day, she could breathe.

But Damian was still staring at the recovered files.

One document had just opened automatically.

Its title was simple:
