Chapter 14 - WHAT THE FILE SAID

Elena almost refused to read it.
Then she did.
The file contained observations about Mia’s routine, daycare times, favorite snacks, and the people she trusted. Vanessa had written them months before the kidnapping.
At the bottom was one line:
CHILD MAKES D SOFT. EASIEST PRESSURE POINT.
Elena’s hands shook.
Damian closed the laptop.
“I’m sorry.”
“Stop apologizing for her.”
“I’m apologizing for letting someone this close to you.”
Elena looked at him for a long moment. “Then do better with what comes next.”
He nodded.
What came next was ugly but clean. Vanessa and Owen faced fraud, identity-theft, conspiracy, and kidnapping-related charges. The money was preserved, the fake story collapsed, and the board publicly cleared Elena.
Reporters wanted her interview.
She refused every one.
A week later, Elena walked into Damian’s study with a resignation letter.
He read it once.
“I won’t fight you.”
She blinked. “You won’t?”
“I want you here. That’s different from having the right to keep you here.”
Her eyes softened.
“I found an apartment in town.”
“Good.”
“And a job managing a boutique hotel.”
He smiled. “They’re lucky.”
At the door, Elena paused.
“Damian?”
It was the first time she had used his first name.
He looked up.
“Mia’s birthday cake never got eaten.”
He stood.
“Is that an invitation?”
Elena smiled.
“Saturday. Two o’clock. Bring no security team.”
He grinned. “Can I bring a cake?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because Mia says you make bad purchasing decisions.”
From the hallway came a tiny voice.
May you like
“I heard that!”
Then Mia ran in holding the same crumpled dollar bill.
