Chapter 4: The Safe House and The Framed Bride

Chapter 4: The Safe House and The Framed Bride

Fifteen minutes later, a heavy, unmarked black pickup truck glided into the muddy lane behind the old stone shed with its headlights completely turned off. The driver’s side door swung open, and Arthur Sterling stepped out, holding a large tactical flashlight and a thick wool coat.

"In here! Fast!" Arthur urged, helping Isabella carry the exhausted, sleeping child into the cab.

He threw the heavy coat over Isabella’s shivering shoulders, hit the ignition, and sped away down the dark rural backroads before Eleanor's search teams could discover their location.

By 3:00 AM, the truck pulled up to an isolated, rustic timber cabin hidden deep within a mountain valley thirty miles outside the city limits. Inside, a fire was already crackling in the stone fireplace, casting a warm, amber glow across the cozy living room.

An elderly woman with kind, gentle eyes rushed forward with hot blankets and a first-aid kit. It was Dr. Mary Pendelton, a trusted retired surgeon and Arthur’s lifelong friend.

"Bring the boy over here, dear," Dr. Mary said softly, taking Leo into her arms and guiding him toward a clean bed in the guest room. "I will stitch his head and get him warm. He is going to be just fine."

Isabella collapsed onto a leather sofa near the fire, her trembling hands clutching a mug of hot tea that Arthur handed her. Her mind was spinning with the speed of their fall into nightmare.

Arthur opened his laptop on the dining table, his face turning solemn as he pulled up the morning news feeds. "Look at this," he said grimly, turning the screen toward her.

Isabella gasped. The top headline on every major news outlet and social media platform featured her wedding photograph, overlaid with a bright red banner:

[BREAKING NEWS: HEIRESS ABDUCTION & ASSAULT]
ISABELLA STERLING WANTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER & KIDNAPPING
POLICE SEARCHING FOR UNHINGED BRIDE WHO ATTACKED HUSBAND
AND FLEE WITH HEIR LEO STERLING

Below the headline was an official statement released by Eleanor Sterling:

"Our family is devastated by tonight's horrific events. My sweet sister-in-law Isabella suffered a sudden, violent psychological breakdown during the reception, physically assaulting my brother Richard and fleeing into the storm with my innocent nephew Leo. We urge the public to contact authorities immediately if she is spotted."

"She flipped the entire narrative," Isabella whispered in horror, her knuckles turning white as she gripped her mug. "She's framing me as an unhinged gold-digger who lost her mind! Nobody will believe a word I say!"

"That is precisely why she released the statement so quickly," Arthur explained, sitting across from her. "By making you a wanted fugitive, she ensures that any evidence you present will be dismissed as the frantic lies of an unstable suspect. Meanwhile, Richard is lying in that cellar, unable to defend himself or his company."

"We can't just sit here while he bleeds to death, Arthur!" Isabella demanded, standing up, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "If Eleanor takes control of Sterling Enterprises at the emergency board meeting tomorrow morning, she will quietly eliminate Richard and claim he succumbed to his injuries!"

"You're right," Arthur agreed, a dangerous glint entering his eyes. "Which means we aren't going to hide. We are going back into that mansion tonight—and we are taking Richard back."
