Chapter 7: The Shadow Board

Chapter 7: The Shadow Board

By 8:30 AM, the pristine glass-and-steel skyscraper of Sterling Enterprises Headquarters in the heart of the financial district was surrounded by media vans and news reporters.
Inside the 50th-floor executive boardroom, Eleanor Sterling sat at the head of a long polished mahogany table, dressed in an elegant obsidian suit. Surrounding her were twelve senior board members, looking anxious and unsettled as they reviewed the morning press reports.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor announced, her voice dripping with practiced sorrow as she dabbed at her dry eyes with a silk handkerchief. "Tragedy has struck our family. My brother Richard remains incapacitated following the violent assault by his new wife. As Vice Chairman, I am calling this emergency session to invoke Clause 12 of our corporate charter."
"Clause 12 allows for the immediate transfer of full executive voting power to the Vice Chairman in the event of Chief Executive incapacitation," legal advisor Miller interjected, sliding official signature documents across the table to the board members.
"We need stability," Eleanor pressed smoothly. "If we do not appoint a permanent Chief Executive before the stock market opens at nine o'clock, our shares will plunge into total freefall. Sign the proxy transfer, and let me protect this company."
Several board members raised their pens, hesitant but seeing no alternative under the pressure of the ticking clock.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown wide open with a booming echo that rattled the glass walls.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
Stepping into the room was Isabella Sterling. She looked magnificent and terrifying—wearing a sharp navy-blue suit, her eyes glowing with absolute authority, flanked by Arthur Sterling and two high-ranking officers from the Federal Financial Crimes Division.

Eleanor slammed her hands onto the mahogany table, her face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. "Security! Arrest that woman immediately! She is a wanted fugitive who attacked my brother!"
"Touch me, and you will be facing federal obstruction of justice charges, Eleanor," Isabella stated calmly, her voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room.

She stepped up to the head of the table, looking down at the woman who had tried to destroy her life.
"I am not a fugitive, Eleanor," Isabella said, pulling a folded document from her jacket pocket and tossing it onto the center of the table. "I am the legally recognized health proxy and sole co-trustee of Richard Sterling's estate. And I am here to report a murder attempt."
