Chapter 5: Infiltrating the Fortress

By 4:30 AM, the storm had settled into a eerie, low-hanging fog that blanketed the sprawling grounds of the Sterling estate.
A sleek grey van glided silently down the unlit residential avenue, stopping near the rear brick wall of the property. Inside were Isabella—now dressed in dark tactical clothing provided by Arthur—and Marcus, a former head of estate security who had been fired by Eleanor months ago for refusing to participate in her illegal surveillance operations.
"Eleanor doubled the perimeter guards on the front driveway," Marcus reported, reviewing the estate's blueprint layout on a digital tablet. "But she forgot about the subterranean maintenance tunnel beneath the wine cellar. It was originally built during Prohibition to ship barrels quietly off the property."
"Does the tunnel open directly into the cellar where Richard is locked?" Isabella asked, checking the battery on her heavy flashlight.
"Yes," Marcus nodded. "The door is secured with a reinforced mechanical padlock. It will take me three minutes to pick it. But once we're inside, we have less than ten minutes before the internal thermal sensors register our body heat."
"Ten minutes is all I need," Isabella said firmly, pulling her dark hair back into a tight braid.
Slipping over the brick wall under the cover of the dense fog, Isabella, Arthur, and Marcus crept along the drainage ditch until they reached an iron hatch concealed beneath overgrown ivy. Marcus pulled out a set of specialized lock-picks, his hands steady as he worked in total silence.
Click.
The heavy iron hatch swung open with a soft groan, exposing a narrow, damp brick passageway that smelled of old dust and cold earth.
Guided only by the dim red glow of Marcus's tactical penlight, they navigated the underground tunnel until they reached a heavy oak door reinforced with iron straps. Isabella pressed her ear against the wood, listening intently.
From the other side, she heard heavy, labored breathing accompanied by the soft clinking of chains.
"Richard?" she whispered frantically through the keyhole. "Richard, can you hear me?"
"Isa... bella?" a weak, hoarse voice rasped from inside the dark room. "Is that... you?"
"Marcus, cut this lock now!" Isabella urged, her heart leaping into her throat.
Marcus produced a high-powered cordless angle grinder, wrapping a thick towel around the blade to muffle the sound. Sparks flew in blinding showers through the dark tunnel as the metal latch gave way with a sharp snap.
Isabella threw the door open and rushed into the cold, damp stone cellar.
Lying on the concrete floor, bound with heavy rope and bleeding heavily from a severe head wound, was Richard Sterling. His handsome face was pale and bruised, his formal tuxedo torn and stained with dried blood.

"Isabella..." Richard gasped, tears welling in his bloodshot eyes as she dropped to her knees beside him, frantically untying the tight ropes binding his wrists. "You... you came back... Where is Leo? Is he safe?"
"He's safe, my love. He's with Dr. Mary," she sobbed, holding his bruised face in her hands and pressing a desperate, tender kiss to his lips. "We are getting you out of here right now."
