Chapter 3: Into the Shadows

The service corridor was a blur of stainless steel and glaring fluorescent lights, a stark contrast to the golden opulence of the ballroom they had just fled. Julian’s grip on Elara’s hand was like a vice, pulling her through the labyrinth of the estate's kitchens. Panicked catering staff pressed themselves against the walls as the ruined bride and the furious groom sprinted past them. Behind them, the muffled shouts of Arthur’s security detail echoed down the narrow halls.

They burst through the heavy metal loading doors and into the freezing, torrential downpour of the night. The rain instantly soaked through Elara’s torn silk dress, plastering it to her shivering skin. Julian didn't hesitate. He led her toward a vintage black Mustang parked near the edge of the servant’s quarters—a restoration project he had poured his soul into, entirely off the grid and unregistered to the Sterling name.

Fumbling with his keys, he unlocked the passenger door, shoving her inside before sprinting to the driver's side. The engine roared to life with a ferocious growl, just as two armed guards burst through the exit doors, their flashlights cutting through the driving rain. Julian slammed the car into reverse, tires screeching against the wet asphalt, before throwing it into drive. The Mustang fish-tailed wildly before gaining traction, tearing down the winding service road and leaving the suffocating nightmare of the Sterling estate behind.

Inside the car, the silence was deafening, broken only by the frantic beating of the windshield wipers. Elara hugged her knees to her chest, her mind a chaotic whirlwind. Hours ago, she was preparing to marry the man of her dreams. Now, she was a kidnapped heiress on the run, and the man beside her was a victim of the very same monster. Julian’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked as though it might shatter. He was stripped of his name, his past, and his future. They were two ghosts driving into the storm, bound by trauma and the desperate need to survive.
