Chapter 5: The Unlikely Ally

By the third day of their exile, paranoia had become a constant companion. Every passing siren, every knock at a neighboring door sent their hearts into overdrive. They had managed to access the Sterling corporate servers through a backdoor Julian had built years ago for emergency audits, downloading gigabytes of financial records that proved Arthur's massive fraud. But they needed the original kidnapping documents to prove his ultimate crime.

As they pored over the digital files, Julian’s burner phone vibrated loudly against the cheap wooden nightstand. The caller ID was blocked. Julian and Elara exchanged a terrifying glance. He answered, putting it on speaker, his voice a low, threatening growl. "Who is this?"

"Julian... thank God," a frail, tear-filled voice crackled through the speaker. It was Eleanor.

"Mother?" Julian’s voice cracked.

"Listen to me carefully, both of you," Eleanor whispered urgently. "Arthur has put a bounty on you. He told the board you both suffered a psychotic break and fled. He's freezing the accounts. But... I found it. I went into his private safe in the study. I have the hospital records. I have the payment receipts to the doctor who falsified Elara's death certificate."

Elara gasped, tears springing to her eyes. "Eleanor, it's too dangerous. If he catches you—"

"He destroyed my life," Eleanor interrupted, her voice suddenly hardening with a mother’s fierce resolve. "He stole my baby girl, and he manipulated the boy I raised as my own son. I am done being a victim. I am mailing the hard copies to a P.O. Box under your grandfather's maiden name. Get them, and burn his empire to the ground." The line went dead.
