Chapter 12: The Reckoning

Chapter 12: The Reckoning

The annual Vance Enterprises Shareholder Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the city’s premier hotel. Hundreds of high-profile investors, journalists, and corporate leaders were in attendance.
On stage, Harrison Cole stood at the podium alongside Marcus Sterling. Arthur Vance sat near the front in a wheelchair, looking frail but determined, surrounded by security guards Marcus had hired to keep him silent.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Harrison announced into the microphone, his voice dripping with false concern. "Tonight, with heavy hearts, we announce the restructuring of Vance Enterprises. Due to recent financial irregularities under Mr. Vance's leadership and Miss Clara Miller's tragic breach of trust, Marcus Sterling will assume the role of interim CEO."
Marcus stepped up to the microphone, raising his glass. "We will restore order and efficiency to this company, cutting unviable vanity projects like the Margaret Miller Wing—"
"That won't be necessary, Mr. Sterling!"
A clear, powerful voice echoed from the back of the grand ballroom.
The doors opened wide, and Clara Miller marched down the center aisle, dressed in an elegant white suit. Beside her walked two senior agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the chief forensic accountant of the State Department.
The room erupted into shocked whispers. Reporters instantly raised their cameras, flashes lighting up the room like lightning.
"Clara! You have no right to be here! Security, escort her out!" Harrison panicked, shouting into the microphone.
"Don't move!" one of the federal agents ordered, pulling out a badge. "This room is officially secured under federal warrant!"
Clara walked straight up to the stage, carrying a laptop. She plugged it into the main audio-visual system of the ballroom. Within seconds, the massive LED screens behind the stage projected hundreds of decrypted bank records, internal emails, and wire transfer logs.
"Three hours ago, federal auditors decrypted the true financial logs of Vance Enterprises," Clara announced to the crowd and live TV cameras. "These records prove that Harrison Cole embezzled over twenty million dollars over six years, framing Victoria Vance and hiding the funds in offshore accounts."
The screen displayed a signed agreement between Harrison Cole and Marcus Sterling, detailing a secret plan to tank Vance Enterprises' stock, force Arthur Vance out, and liquidate the hospital foundation for personal profit.
Marcus’s face turned deathly pale. "This... this is an illegal breach of privacy!"
"No, Marcus," Clara said, staring him down. "This is accountability."
The federal agents stepped onto the stage. Handcuffs clicked audibly around Harrison Cole’s wrists as he screamed in denial. Marcus Sterling attempted to walk away toward the side exit, but was blocked by two federal officers.

"Marcus Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice," the agent declared.
As the disgraced executives were led away in handcuffs before flashing cameras, the entire ballroom broke into thunderous applause. Arthur Vance stood up from his wheelchair, tears of pride streaming down his face as he looked at Clara.
