Chapter 9: Framed in the Spotlight

The emergency board meeting was convened three days later. Arthur remained hospitalized in stable condition, leaving Clara to face the predatory board alone.

The boardroom was tense. At the head of the long oak table sat Harrison Cole, the Vice President of Vance Enterprises, who was presiding over the meeting in Arthur's absence. To his right sat Marcus Sterling, wearing a triumphant smile.

"Members of the board," Harrison began, his voice devoid of warmth. "In light of Chairman Vance’s sudden health crisis and the mounting media scrutiny, Mr. Sterling has brought forward evidence that demands our immediate attention."

Marcus stood up, connecting a flash drive to the presentation screen. A series of complex wire transfers appeared on the monitor.

"Over the past three months," Marcus announced smoothly, "more than two million dollars from the Margaret Miller Charitable Fund were routed through an offshore account in the Cayman Islands before landing in a private account registered under Clara Miller’s name."

Gasps echoed around the room. Clara stood up immediately, her chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"That is a lie!" Clara stated firmly. "I have never opened an offshore account in my life! Those financial records are forged!"

"The paper trail is certified by an independent auditor, Miss Miller," Marcus replied coldly. "Or should I say, former Executive Director Miller?"

Harrison Cole cleared his throat. "Given the severity of these documents, the board must take decisive action. Effective immediately, Clara Miller is suspended without pay, pending a full federal investigation. Furthermore, all corporate funding for the Margaret Miller Wing is frozen."

The board members began nodding in agreement, intimidated by Marcus’s overwhelming financial leverage.

Clara looked around the room at the faces of people she had worked with for years. None of them dared to speak up for her. They were afraid, just as they had been when Victoria was in power.

"You think you’ve won, Marcus," Clara said, her voice resonant and clear, cutting through the murmurs in the room. "You framed me because you know that as long as I am standing, you can't tear down this company’s integrity. But the truth doesn't disappear just because you hide it behind legal tricks."

She gathered her files, held her head high, and walked out of the room with unyielding dignity.
