Six months later, Clara received an unexpected invitation. Victoria Vance had requested a visitor's meeting at the federal prison.
When Clara arrived, she noticed a profound change in Victoria. The bitterness that once consumed her was gone, replaced by a quiet humility.
"Thank you for coming, Clara," Victoria said softly through the screen.
"How are you holding up, Victoria?" Clara asked gently.
"It’s hard," Victoria admitted. "But for the first time in my life, my mind is clear. I heard about what you did for my daughter... you kept your word. Her college tuition was paid, and she was able to stay in school."
"She’s doing wonderful," Clara smiled. "She actually volunteered at the hospital wing last weekend."
Victoria wiped away a quiet tear. "I spent my whole life chasing power and money, thinking it would make me safe. I viewed you and your mother as threats because you had something money couldn't buy—unconditional love and integrity."
Victoria reached out, placing her hand against the glass partition. Clara placed her hand on the glass directly over Victoria’s.
"I am truly sorry, Clara," Victoria said, her voice filled with deep sincerity. "For everything."
