CHAPTER 3 : THE SHADOWS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

CHAPTER 3 : THE SHADOWS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

The heavy oak doors of the Harrington estate’s private executive suite closed with a muffled click, sealing out the chaotic noise of the grand ballroom. Inside, the atmosphere was a sanctuary of soft lighting, antique mahogany, and hushed reverence.

Maya lay curled up on a deep, velvet-upholstered sofa, her breathing slow and even. The terror of the evening had finally caught up to her, lulling her into a deep, exhausted sleep. A soft cashmere blanket draped over her small shoulders, shielding her from the cold reality of the world outside.

Sophia sat in a wingback armchair beside the sofa, her posture rigid yet graceful. She wore her emerald evening dress like armor, every fold immaculate, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute composure. Yet, beneath the calm exterior, the protective fire of a mother still burned fiercely in her dark eyes.

Lord Harrington stepped forward quietly, holding a silver tray with a steaming cup of chamomile tea. He placed it gently on the mahogany table before bowing his head in profound apology.

"Madame President," Harrington murmured, his voice laced with deep remorse. "I cannot express how deeply ashamed I am that such a vile violation occurred under my roof. When I invited the Vance family, I had no idea their inner circle harbored such profound rot."

Sophia accepted the teacup, her fingers brushing the porcelain with deliberate calm. "You could not have known, Lord Harrington. Arrogance blinds people to the monsters they invite into their homes. Julian Vance believed his family name made him untouchable. Tonight, he learned that no amount of inherited wealth can shield a criminal from the consequences of their actions."

"The federal marshals have taken both Julian and Victoria into custody," Harrington reported, stepping back respectfully. "Their electronic devices have been confiscated, and our security team has handed over the master hard drives containing the unedited footage. Their legal team is already attempting to file emergency injunctions, but given the public nature of the crime and the federal jurisdiction, they are going nowhere."

"Let them try," Sophia said softly, taking a slow sip of her tea. "The web of fraud Julian wove took years to construct. It will take the federal courts mere days to tear it apart."

Miles away, inside the harsh, fluorescent-lit holding facility of the federal precinct, the illusion of the Vance empire was rapidly dissolving into screams of mutual recrimination.

Julian paced frantically inside his glass-paneled holding cell, his tailored suit jacket discarded, his tie loosened, and his hair wildly disheveled. The knee where Sophia had struck him throbbed with a dull, agonizing ache, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the absolute panic consuming his mind.

"This is your fault!" Julian roared, slamming his fists against the reinforced glass partition separating his cell from Victoria's. "If you hadn't stolen that damn necklace so clumsily—if you hadn't tried to frame a child—none of this would have happened!"

Victoria sat on the metal bench of her cell, her face stained with ruined mascara, her designer gold gown torn at the hem. She looked up, her eyes blazing with a venomous hatred that matched his own.

"My fault?!" Victoria shrieked, jumping to her feet and marching up to the glass. "You were the one drowning in gambling debts from Monte Carlo! You were the one who ordered me to steal the sapphire to collect the fifty-million-dollar insurance payout! You said your shipping companies were bankrupt! I was just your obedient soldier, Julian, and the moment the spotlight hit us, you tried to throw me to the wolves!"

"I am the heir to the Vance dynasty!" Julian yelled back, his voice cracking with hysteria as guards outside banged their batons against the metal bars to quiet them. "You were supposed to be smart enough not to get caught!"

May you like

"Your dynasty is dead, Julian!" Victoria laughed hysterically, the sound harsh and broken. "The federal auditors are already seizing your offshore accounts. By morning, you won't even own the clothes on your back."

Julian staggered backward, sliding down the glass partition until he hit the cold concrete floor. He buried his face in his hands as the terrifying reality washed over him. The titan had fallen, and there was no one left to catch him.
