CHAPTER 15: THE VENOMOUS WHISPERS

Within forty-eight hours, the digital assault began. It was a masterclass in modern, weaponized social media—the kind of drama that fed on sensationalism and algorithmic outrage.

It started with a seemingly innocent, anonymous blog post questioning the financial transparency of the Maya Center. Then, heavily edited audio clips were leaked to a major tabloid network. The clips, spliced together from Sophia’s past court depositions, were manipulated to make it sound as though she had orchestrated the downfall of Aegis Capital purely for personal financial gain, using her daughter as a pawn.

By Tuesday evening, the hashtag #TheVanceDeception was trending worldwide.

Sophia sat at the massive oak dining table in the Harrington estate, her laptop open in front of her. The screen was a toxic waterfall of hateful comments, fabricated evidence, and aggressive media inquiries.

Lord Harrington placed a warm cup of tea beside her keyboard, his expression grave but resolute. "Do not let the venom of strangers poison your heart, Sophia. They do not know the truth."

"It’s not me I’m worried about, Edward," Sophia whispered, rubbing her temples. "They are posting pictures of Maya. Victoria Thorne’s PR firm is trying to spin a narrative that I am an unfit mother, that the Center is a cult, and that Maya needs to be placed in state custody."

Edward’s eyes flashed with a rare, terrifying anger. The kind of aristocratic fury that had made him a titan of industry decades ago. "They will have to walk through fire before they touch a single hair on that child’s head."

Suddenly, the estate's heavy wooden front doors opened. Maya walked in, holding a tablet. Her usually bright face was pale. Someone at her private school had shown her a viral video mocking her mother.

"Mommy?" Maya's voice trembled. "Why are people saying bad things about you? Are we going to have to run away again?"

Sophia’s heart broke, but in that fracture, a fierce, unstoppable fire was ignited. She knelt down, taking Maya's small hands in hers. "No, my sweet girl. We are never running again. When people tell lies in the dark, we don't hide. We turn on the brightest light we have."

She looked up at Lord Harrington. "Get our legal team. Call the major networks. We aren't going to release a statement. I’m going to do a live interview. If Victoria Thorne wants a war, she just declared it on the wrong mother."
