CHAPTER 6 : THE SCALES OF JUSTICE

CHAPTER 6 : THE SCALES OF JUSTICE

Three weeks later, the federal courthouse was a fortress of media frenzy. Every major news network broadcasted live from the steps, reporting on the trial of the decade. United States v. Julian Vance and Victoria Sterling.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, financial analysts, and high-society elites filled the gallery, eager to witness the final downfall of the once-untouchable billionaire.

Julian sat at the defense table, looking unrecognizable. The expensive bespoke suits were gone, replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit. His hair was unkempt, his face hollowed out by weeks of stress and confinement, and his eyes darted nervously around the room. Beside him, Victoria sat with her head bowed low, refusing to look at anyone.

At the prosecution table sat Sophia, serving as a special federal investigator and co-counsel, her presence radiating calm, unshakeable authority.

The presiding judge, a stern man with decades on the federal bench, adjusted his glasses and reviewed the final evidentiary file.

"The court has reviewed all financial records, encrypted communications, and unedited security footage submitted by the prosecution," the judge announced, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The evidence of systematic insurance fraud, embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy is absolute and overwhelming."

Julian’s defense attorney stood up desperately. "Your Honor, my client maintains that he was misled by his co-defendant—"

"Save it, Counselor," the judge snapped, cutting him off mid-sentence. "The encrypted emails recovered from Mr. Vance’s private server explicitly prove he orchestrated the theft and planned the fraudulent insurance claim. Furthermore, the physical assault on a minor during the commission of the crime is a matter of public and recorded record."

Victoria slowly stood up, looking toward the judge with tear-filled eyes. "Your Honor, I wish to enter a formal plea of full cooperation. I acted on Mr. Vance’s direct orders."

"Traitor!" Julian hissed, lunging across the table toward her, but federal marshals instantly pinned his arms back, forcing him down into his chair.

"Order! Order in the court!" the judge shouted, banging his gavel sharply. He glared down at Julian with undisguised contempt.

"Julian Vance, for the crimes of grand financial fraud, systemic corruption, conspiracy, and aggravated assault of a minor, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."

The gavel slammed down with the finality of a guillotine.

Julian let out a ragged, desperate gasp, his hands gripping the wooden table as the crushing weight of his reality set in. His empire, his wealth, his prestige, and his freedom were completely, irrevocably gone.

"Victoria Sterling," the judge continued, turning his gaze toward her. "For your active participation in the conspiracy and grand larceny, you are sentenced to eight years in a federal correctional facility."

As the bailiffs approached both defendants, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto their wrists, the gallery remained dead silent. There were no gasps of sympathy, no cries of protest—only the cold, satisfying click of absolute justice being served.

Sophia watched quietly as Julian and Victoria were led away through the side doors of the courtroom. She felt no malice, only a profound, grounding relief. The storm had passed. The threat was neutralized.
