Chapter 12 - A Ghost from the Past

Despite our success, there was one piece of unfinished business. My grandfather’s private study in the penthouse had remained locked since I arrived. Even though I lived in the suite, I hadn't been able to bring myself to go through his personal things.

On the one-year anniversary of his passing, Alexander and I walked into the dusty, wood-paneled room. It smelled faintly of his pipe tobacco and old paper.

"I miss him," I whispered, touching the edge of his heavy mahogany desk. "I just hope he would be proud of what we've done with the place."

Alexander walked over to a beautiful landscape painting of the lodge that hung behind the desk. "I think he knew exactly what he was doing, Elena."

He reached behind the frame and pulled out a small, sealed envelope. He handed it to me. On the front, in my grandfather's shaky, elegant cursive, it read: For Elena. When she is ready.

My hands trembled as I broke the wax seal. I unfolded the heavy parchment paper.

My dearest Elena,

If you are reading this, it means you have weathered the storm. I always knew Thomas was weak, corrupted by greed. I left the legal loopholes in the trust hoping you would find them, hoping they would force you to come to the mountain and fight for your birthright.

A company is just a building, Elena. A legacy is the people inside it. You have your mother’s fire and my stubbornness. I knew you would save them.

I am so proud of the woman you are. Protect the mountain.

Love, Grandfather.

Tears streamed down my face, falling onto the ink. Alexander pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly as I cried—not tears of sorrow, but of profound closure. The manipulation, the stress, the battle—it wasn't just to save a business. It was a final test from a man who loved me enough to ensure I was strong enough to lead.

"He knew," I whispered into Alexander's chest. "He believed in me."

"So do I, Elena," Alexander said softly, tilting my chin up to look into his eyes. "More than anything."
