Chapter 6 - The Viral Blackmail
The next morning, the blizzard finally broke, leaving the mountain bathed in brilliant, blinding sunlight. But the storm inside the lodge was just beginning.

I was in my grandfather’s study with Alexander, pouring over the black ledger. The depth of Thomas’s betrayal was staggering. He had been stealing from the employee pension fund, cutting health benefits, and skimming profits from the luxury spa.
My phone buzzed violently. It was a notification from Facebook. Then another. And another.
I opened the app. A video was trending locally, posted by an anonymous account. It was a heavily edited, deep-fake style video showing me allegedly screaming at the lodge staff, calling them "peasants," and a forged audio clip of me admitting I planned to sell the lodge to a Russian conglomerate and fire everyone.
"Julian," I breathed, showing the screen to Alexander. "He must have scheduled this to post before you knocked him out. He’s trying to destroy the lodge's reputation so Thomas can buy it back for pennies."
Within an hour, the lodge’s Facebook page was flooded with angry comments. Boycott threats. Cancellations were rolling in by the minute. Our stock valuation was plummeting in real-time.
"We need a PR team. We need a press release denying it," Alexander said, his business instincts taking over.
"No. PR speak looks guilty," I said, a fire igniting in my chest. "This is the era of social media. We fight fire with absolute transparency."
I set up my phone on a tripod in the grand lobby, right in front of the massive stone fireplace. I didn't wear a suit. I wore a simple sweater. I hit 'Go Live' on the Alpine Lodge's official Facebook page.
"Hello," I said, looking directly into the lens. "My name is Elena Sterling. You’ve seen a video today. It is a lie, fabricated by a disgruntled former employee who was caught embezzling. But I’m not here to talk about him. I’m here to talk about the truth."
I held up the black ledger. I laid bare everything Thomas had done. I didn't hide the ugliness. I admitted the company had been hurting. But then, I made a promise.
"My grandfather, Arthur Sterling, built this lodge on the belief that true hospitality starts with how you treat your own people. Starting today, I am restoring the employee pension fund. I am raising the base wage by twenty percent. This lodge belongs to the people who make it magic. Come stay with us and see for yourself."

I ended the broadcast. Within ten minutes, the video had a hundred thousand views. The comments flipped from anger to overwhelming support. People loved a comeback story. We hadn't just survived the PR crisis; we had turned it into the best marketing campaign in the lodge’s history.
Alexander watched me from the corner of the room. "Remind me never to play poker with you, Elena."
