Chapter 13: Cornered Prey

Though the legal battle was won, the final loose ends of justice required one last resolution in open court. A month later, the trial preliminary hearings commenced at the New York State Supreme Court.

Julian and Clara arrived together, surrounded by a respectful security team. Inside the packed courtroom, Victor Vance sat at the defense table beside his high-priced criminal defense attorneys. Across the aisle sat Elena, looking gaunt and stripped of her former arrogance, wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit.

During the proceedings, the prosecution played the unedited security footage retrieved from the estate’s control room—the damning recording of Elena’s break-in, Marcus's betrayal, and Victor’s clear authorization logs.

As the video played across the courtroom monitors, the sheer cruelty of the conspiracy was exposed to the world.

"Your Honor," the Lead Prosecutor stated, addressing the judge. "The evidence demonstrates a deliberate, calculated campaign of terror against innocent lives to conceal financial corruption of an unprecedented scale. The defendants showed zero remorse for their actions."

When given the opportunity to speak before the judge ruled on bail restrictions and pre-trial detention, Elena broke down in tears, finally confessing to her full involvement and identifying Victor as the sole mastermind who had manipulated her desperation.

Victor sat frozen, his defense completely shattered. The judge slammed the gavel down with a resounding crack.

"Bail is denied for all defendants. Trial date is set. Remanded to federal custody."

As officers led Victor away, he turned to look at Julian and Clara one last time. But there was no rage left in his eyes—only the hollow, defeated glare of a man who realized he had lost everything to the very integrity he had dismissed as weakness.
