Chapter 9: The Fracture

Chapter 9: The Fracture

Victor slammed his palm onto the mahogany table, the sharp echo cutting through the quiet room. "This is absurd! Julian is using personal grievances and unstable outsiders to stall an official board proceeding. I move to execute Motion 41-B immediately—the removal of Julian Vance as Chief Executive Officer!"
"Second the motion," chimed in Board Member Miller, one of the executives Victor had bought off.
"Before you second anything, Mr. Miller," Clara spoke up, her voice clear, resounding, and unwavering. She opened her portfolio and pressed a button on a small remote control.
The high-definition presentation monitors lining the boardroom walls flickered to life. Instead of corporate financial charts, a side-by-side comparison of two signatures appeared on the screens.

"Twenty years ago," Clara began, looking directly at the board members, "my father, Arthur Montgomery, discovered a secondary set of books within Vance Global. When he refused to alter the financial records, his signature was forged, and he was forced out under threat of financial ruined. For two decades, those same offshore accounts have been used to siphon capital from this firm's primary investments."
"Fabricated lies!" Victor shouted, standing up, his face flushing deep crimson. "Security, clear this room!"
"Security won't be entering this floor, Victor," Evelyn said coolly, holding up her smartphone screen. "Because federal agents are currently downstairs securing the primary server rooms under a sealed federal warrant."
Panic rippled across the boardroom table. Board members began whispering frantically to one another, pulling out their phones.

"You think you've won?" Victor snarled, dropping his suave facade entirely as he leaned over the table toward Julian. "You think a few old papers and digital files mean anything in my world? I built this company, Julian! Your father was too soft, too weak to do what was necessary! I did what had to be done!"
"You didn't build it, Victor," Julian said calmly, rising from his chair to stand toe-to-toe with his uncle. "You bled it dry. And now, the bill is due."
