Chapter 8: The Crucible of Fire

Six months passed.
Madrid watched in amazement as the De La Vega empire underwent a complete transformation. Under Elena’s leadership as President of the Charitable Foundation, three new pediatric wings were opened in public hospitals, and an expansive community center was constructed in Vallecas, Elena's old neighborhood, to provide shelter and education for underprivileged children.
Julian worked alongside Elena every step of the way. Over long late-night meetings, shared coffee, and quiet walks through the estate gardens, their professional respect had deepened into a tender, profound love. Julian admired Elena’s unwavering kindness and strength, while Elena found in Julian a rock of integrity she could always trust.
Meanwhile, Victoria lived in a modest one-bedroom apartment near the foundation’s community center. The transition was brutal for her. Used to designer clothes and private drivers, she now took the public metro, managed her own meager budget, and worked ten hours a day doing paperwork for the charity.
The media tried to mock her, taking photographs of the former heiress carrying boxes of donated supplies. But Victoria paid no attention to the tabloids. For the first time, seeing the smiles on the faces of orphans receiving medical care began to fill the empty void inside her heart.
One evening, a tragedy struck the newly built Vallecas Community Center.
An electrical short-circuit during a heavy lightning storm triggered a massive fire in the center’s rear warehouse, where thousands of blankets, toys, and winter supplies were stored for the upcoming winter drive.
Elena, who was working late in the administrative office with Julian, heard the fire alarms blaring. Smoke quickly filled the hallways.
"Julian! Call the fire department!" Elena shouted, coughing as smoke billowed through the corridor.
As workers and volunteers scrambled to evacuate the building, a frantic staff member ran up to Elena in the courtyard.
"Miss Elena! Two children from the evening shelter program are trapped in the second-floor reading room!" the worker cried. "The main stairwell is blocked by flames!"
Without a second thought, Elena grabbed a wet towel, wrapped it around her mouth, and ran back into the burning building despite Julian’s desperate cries for her to stop.
Victoria, who had been packing boxes in the adjacent annex, saw Elena dash into the flames.
For a split second, an old, dark voice in Victoria’s mind whispered that if Elena perished in that fire, all the estate would revert back to her. But that voice was instantly shattered by a wave of genuine horror and sisterly panic.

"Elena!" Victoria screamed.
Disregarding her own safety, Victoria pulled a coat over her head and charged straight into the inferno after her sister.
