Chapter 9: Sisterhood in the Ashes

Chapter 9: Sisterhood in the Ashes

Inside the second floor, smoke was thick and suffocating. The heat was blinding as flames licked the wooden rafters above.

Elena found the two young children huddled under a heavy oak desk in the reading room, terrified and sobbing.

"It's okay! I'm here!" Elena called out, crouching down and gathering both children into her arms. "Hold on to me tightly!"

She carried one child and guided the other toward the exit, but as they reached the hallway, a burning support beam snapped overhead, collapsing in front of the door with a loud crash, cutting off their escape route.

Trapped, Elena pulled the children into a corner, shielding them with her own body as smoke filled her lungs. She coughed violently, her vision blurring.

"Help!" Elena cried out, her strength fading. "Someone help us!"

Suddenly, the burning debris was kicked aside with desperate force. Victoria emerged through the thick smoke, her face covered in soot, her hands blistered from pushing hot wood aside.

"Elena! Over here!" Victoria yelled, rushing into the room.

"Victoria... the children..." Elena gasped, barely able to speak.

"Take my hand!" Victoria commanded.

Victoria lifted the smaller child into her arms while grabbing Elena’s arm with her free hand, pulling her toward the rear emergency exit—a metal fire escape that had not yet been reached by the flames.

Together, the two sisters guided the children down the metal stairs just as firefighters arrived on the scene with water hoses and ladders.

Paramedics rushed forward, wrapping blankets around Elena, Victoria, and the rescued children. Julian ran to Elena, pulling her into his arms with trembling force, kissing her forehead as tears streamed down his face.

"You're safe... Thank God, you're safe," Julian murmured.

Elena looked over Julian's shoulder. Victoria was sitting on the back of an ambulance, receiving oxygen, her hands bandaged from burns.

Elena gently stepped away from Julian and walked over to Victoria.

Victoria looked up, coughing slightly, her eyes filled with tears of regret and relief. "I'm sorry... about the center, Elena... I tried to save what I could..."

Elena didn't say a word. She leaned forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Victoria, embracing her sister for the very first time in their lives.

Victoria froze in shock for a second, then broke down, hugging Elena back tightly, weeping openly under the flashing emergency lights.

"Thank you," Elena whispered in Victoria's ear. "You saved my life today, sister."

For the first time, Victoria felt a deep, genuine sense of worth—not because of her wealth or legal standing, but because she had chosen love over hatred.
