Chapter 6: Unmasking the Puppeteer

Chapter 6: Unmasking the Puppeteer
The high-stakes battle reached a critical junction at the annual Metropolitan Leadership Gala—a prestigious gathering of the city’s political elite, corporate titans, and media moguls. Historically, Marcus Thorne had dominated this event, using it to secure deals and project an aura of invincibility.
This year, Victoria Sterling was set to receive the "Philanthropist of the Year" award, an honor designed to rehabilitate her firm’s reputation following the SEC disclosures.
Evelyn knew that if Victoria received that award and secured the political endorsement of the Mayor, Blackwood Capital would gain the leverage needed to push through the foreclosure on the Oakridge land.
"You can't just crash the gala, Evie," Liam warned her as they sat in the back of a town car outside the grand hotel. "Your invitation was revoked by the board yesterday."
"I don't need an invitation, Liam," Evelyn said, adjusting the lapel of her elegant cream-colored evening gown. "I still technically hold thirty percent of the voting shares in the venue’s parent company—a detail Marcus forgot to strip from my trust."
With Julian by her side in a tailored tuxedo, Evelyn walked past the security checkpoint, presenting her legal shareholding credentials. The guards, recognizing her face from every news broadcast in the country, hesitated before stepping aside.
Inside the grand ballroom, glittered chandeliers cast light over hundreds of guests in black-tie attire. When Evelyn stepped into the room, a collective hush swept across the hall. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.
Victoria Sterling stood near the main stage, sipping champagne alongside the District Attorney and several city council members. When she spotted Evelyn, her eyes narrowed, and her smile instantly vanished.
Victoria walked directly toward Evelyn, her silk gown rustling against the floor. "You have incredible nerve showing your face here, Evelyn. Security is on their way to escort you out."
"Let them try, Victoria," Evelyn said smoothly, her voice calm and carrying just enough power to draw a surrounding crowd of onlookers. "I’m not here to cause a scene. I’m here to hand you a subpoena."
Evelyn reached into her clutch and pulled out a folded white envelope, pressing it gently against Victoria’s chest.
"What is this nonsense?" Victoria hissed under her breath.
"It’s a summons from the Federal Grand Jury," Evelyn announced loudly enough for nearby reporters to hear clearly. "It turns out that the offshore accounts Marcus used weren't just registered in his name. Your personal signature appears as an authorized co-signatory on the shell company that funneled funds out of the country three days before his arrest."
Victoria’s face drained of color. The surrounding guests began pulling out their phones, taking photos and recording videos of the confrontation.
"You're bluffing," Victoria whispered, her hands beginning to tremble slightly.
"Check the news in five minutes," Julian added quietly beside Evelyn. "The Department of Justice just unsealed the indictment. Your board of directors is holding an emergency meeting right now to remove you as CEO."

Before Victoria could respond, her chief of staff rushed up to her, whispering frantically in her ear while showing her a tablet screen. The look of absolute horror on Victoria’s face confirmed everything.
Without saying another word, Evelyn turned gracefully and walked out of the ballroom, leaving Victoria standing alone under the harsh glare of the cameras as the ballroom erupted into chaos.
