Chapter 9: Broken Glass

Chapter 9: Broken Glass
Despite his mounting legal disasters, Marcus’s hidden networks attempted one final, desperate move.
Realizing that the original physical ledgers kept in Evelyn’s possession held the ultimate proof of his international money-laundering network, Marcus’s remaining operative—a crooked former security chief named Frank Slater—decided to take matters into his own hands.
It was a stormy Tuesday night. Rain lashed against the windows of the small architectural firm office where Evelyn and Julian were finalizing the community reconstruction plans for Oakridge.
The power suddenly cut out, plunging the building into pitch darkness.
"Stay still," Julian whispered instantly, stepping close to Evelyn and pulling a flashlight from his desk drawer. "The backup generator should have kicked in."
Outside the office door, heavy footsteps echoed on the wet floorboards. The glass door frame shattered violently as Frank Slater kicked it open, holding a heavy tactical flashlight and a iron crowbar.
"Hand over the hard drives and the original books, Mrs. Thorne!" Slater growled, his voice rough and aggressive. "Do it now, and nobody gets hurt!"
Julian immediately stepped in front of Evelyn, placing his body as a shield. "Slater, the police are already on their way. The security system sends an automatic silent alert when the main breaker is tripped."
"I don't care!" Slater yelled, swinging the crowbar toward Julian.
Julian ducked beneath the heavy metal bar, tackling Slater around the waist and crashing them both into a nearby drafting table. Pencils, blueprints, and computer monitors crashed to the floor.
"Julian!" Evelyn screamed.
Slater raised the crowbar again, pinning Julian against the wall. But Evelyn didn't freeze or run. She grabbed a heavy bronze architectural model from the shelf and struck Slater across his shoulder with all her strength.
Slater stumbled back, groaning in pain, dropping the crowbar. Before he could recover, the sound of blaring police sirens echoed from the street below. Red and blue lights flashed through the rain-streaked windows.
Realizing he was trapped, Slater turned and bolted out the emergency stairwell, only to run directly into the arms of the armed police officers storming up the steps.
Julian slumped against the desk, gasping for air, a small cut bleeding near his temple. Evelyn rushed to his side, tearing a piece of cloth from her scarf to press against his wound.
"Are you crazy?" she cried, her voice trembling with emotion as tears welled in her eyes. "He could have killed you!"
May you like
Julian looked up at her, catching her hand gently and holding it against his cheek. "I told you, Evelyn... I’m not letting anyone hurt you ever again. You’re too important... to this city, and to me."
Evelyn looked into his soft, resolute eyes, feeling the protective walls she had built around her heart for years finally melt away. Leaning down, she pressed her forehead against his, breathing in the quiet safety of his presence amidst the broken glass.
