Chapter 8: The Trial Begins

The Federal District Courthouse was surrounded by satellite trucks, journalists, and hundreds of peaceful protesters holding signs that read JUSTICE FOR OAKRIDGE and END CORPORATE GREED.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was thick with tension. Marcus Thorne sat at the defense table dressed in a crisp dark suit, attempting to maintain his trademark look of power. However, the deep dark circles under his eyes and his tense posture betrayed his inner panic.

On the other side of the aisle sat Evelyn, flanked by the lead federal prosecutors and her brother Liam.

Judge Richard Miller slammed his gavel, bringing the packed courtroom to order. "We are here for the preliminary evidentiary hearing in the matter of the United States v. Marcus Thorne."

Marcus’s high-priced lead attorney, Arthur Vance (no relation to Julian), stood up immediately, aiming to seize control of the narrative.

"Your Honor," Vance began smoothly, "this entire prosecution is built upon the unreliable statements of a vengeful, bitter ex-wife who is seeking a larger financial payout in her divorce proceedings. Mrs. Thorne has engaged in a calculated campaign to smear my client’s name and destroy a thriving corporation that employs thousands."

Judge Miller raised an eyebrow. "Is that your defense, Mr. Vance? That Mrs. Thorne fabricated thousands of pages of audited banking transactions?"

"We intend to prove, Your Honor, that Mrs. Thorne herself managed those offshore accounts!" Vance declared dramatically, pulling a stack of papers from his leather folder—the exact fabricated files Mark had leaked under instruction. "We have internal records proving she authorized the transfer of funds!"

The courtroom gasped. Marcus smirked slightly, turning to glance at Evelyn with cold triumph.

Federal Prosecutor Maria Santos calmly stood up from the prosecution table. "Your Honor, if defense counsel is referring to the files transferred from our secure database two nights ago, we request that the court immediately review Exhibit 44-B."

Prosecutor Santos submitted a sealed digital audit trail to the bench.

"What is the meaning of this?" Judge Miller asked, skimming the document.

"Your Honor," Santos explained clearly, "the document defense counsel just presented was a watermarked trap file created by federal investigators to trace an ongoing illegal leak orchestrated by the defendant from his jail facility. The digital signatures prove that Mr. Thorne paid a bribe to access confidential files and attempted to introduce falsified evidence into this courtroom."

Judge Miller’s face flushed with anger. He slammed his hand onto the bench. "Mr. Vance, did you verify the authenticity of these documents before presenting them to my court?"

Vance turned pale, stuttering helplessly. "Your Honor... my team was assured..."

"Silence!" Judge Miller thundered. "Mr. Thorne, your bail is officially revoked. You will remain in federal custody until the conclusion of this trial. And Mr. Vance, you will answer to a contempt charge in my chambers immediately following this session."

Marcus’s face turned ash-gray as federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed him by the arms, and forced him back into his seat. The arrogance that had sustained him for a lifetime evaporated into raw, helpless terror.

Evelyn watched quietly from across the room. There was no joy in her heart at his destruction—only a profound sense that balance was finally being restored.
