Chapter 7: The Betrayal Within

Victory felt near, but a sudden blow struck from an unexpected quarter.

Two days before the federal court was set to rule on the injunction against Blackwood Capital, a major security breach occurred within Evelyn’s inner team. Confidential strategy documents—including the testimony transcripts of key witnesses from the Oakridge neighborhood—were leaked to Marcus’s defense team.

The leak threatened to ruin the prosecution’s case and expose vulnerable witnesses to public harassment and legal intimidation.

Evelyn sat in the legal team’s war room, staring at the printed leak. "It had to be someone in this room. Only five people had access to these files."

Liam looked around the table at the tired faces of their paralegals and junior attorneys. "We need to audit everyone’s communications immediately."

Julian stood near the window, analyzing the file metadata on his laptop. "Wait... look at the timestamp on the uploaded files. They were transferred from the secure cloud drive at 2:00 AM yesterday using an administrator password."

Evelyn looked at the user log. The credentials belonged to corporate paralegal Mark Thompson—a young man who had worked tirelessly on the case for months.

"Bring Mark in," Evelyn said softly, feeling a pit of disappointment settle in her stomach.

Ten minutes later, Mark sat across from Evelyn in a small conference room. He was shaking, sweating profusely, and unable to look her in the eye.

"Why, Mark?" Evelyn asked gently. "We trusted you. The people of Oakridge trusted you."

Mark buried his face in his hands, breaking down into quiet sobs. "They... they bought out my mother’s medical debt, Mrs. Thorne. Marcus’s private team contacted me two weeks ago. They threatened to foreclose on my mother’s care facility if I didn't feed them updates. I didn't have a choice!"

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly, feeling a mixture of anger and deep sorrow. Marcus was still managing to manipulate people from inside his jail cell, targeting the vulnerable just as he always had.

Instead of screaming or threatening the young man, Evelyn took a deep breath. "You always have a choice, Mark. But right now, you have one chance to fix this."

"How?" Mark asked, wiping his eyes.

"Marcus thinks you’re still working for him," Evelyn said, leaning in closer. "You’re going to send them one more document. A document that we prepare for them."

Over the next twenty-four hours, Evelyn, Liam, and the federal prosecutors set a trap. They fed Mark a fabricated set of financial records designed to lure Marcus’s lead defense attorney into presenting false evidence in court—an action that would irrevocably destroy their defense strategy and expose their ongoing illegal interference.
