Chapter 2: The Architecture of Lies

The mall, once a sanctuary of consumerist bliss, now felt like a cage. As the mother—whose name, Elena, Leo would soon learn—tried to shove him away, the security guards finally arrived, their movements sluggish and confused. But they were too late. The secret had already breached the dam.

Leo stood, his shadow looming over the girl, who was still clutching the cold metal of the dog tag. Her name, he discovered through the fragmented, terrified whispers that followed, was Mia. And as she looked up at him, the recognition in her eyes wasn't just shock—it was a mirror. The same jagged scar that sat on his forearm sat just above her collarbone, a hidden mark of a past they both shared but neither had been allowed to remember.

"You’re one of them," Mia whispered, her voice trembling. "The ones who were supposed to be erased."

Elena lunged for her daughter, desperate to pull her away from the truth, but Leo caught her wrist with a grip that was firm but not violent. "He’s gone, Elena," Leo said, his voice dropping into a tone of chilling clarity. "The man who built that summer house, the man who stole our childhoods to fuel his sick experiments—he’s dead. But you? You kept the leash. You kept the records."

The crowd was filming. The "mall incident" would be trending within minutes. Elena’s mask of polished indifference cracked, and for the first time, she looked like a woman who realized that her carefully curated life was a house of cards. She didn't fight back; she sagged, the weight of years of complicity finally crushing her.

"I did what I had to do to keep her safe," Elena hissed, her eyes darting to the bystanders. "You have no idea what he was capable of."

"I know exactly what he was capable of," Leo countered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Because I’m the one who remembers the pain. And now, she’s going to remember too."
