Chapter 4: The Breaking Point

The final showdown took place not in a courtroom, but in the boardroom of the company that had bankrolled the project. The board members, sharks in tailored suits, had attempted to bury the evidence, claiming the projects were rogue, independent ventures.

Leo and Mia walked into that boardroom with the poise of people who had nothing left to lose. They weren't there to scream or throw accusations; they were there to present the data. During their weeks of hiding, they had managed to decrypt the very drive that contained the entire history of the project—including the signatures and video logs of the board members themselves.

When Leo placed the flash drive on the mahogany table, the silence in the room was absolute.

"You thought you could erase us," Leo said, his voice echoing against the cold, high-ceilinged walls. "You thought we were footnotes in your quarterly reports. But you forgot one thing: trauma is a powerful mnemonic. We remember every single thing you did."

The fallout was instantaneous. Within hours, the stock plummeted, federal agents raided the offices, and the narrative shifted from a "conspiracy theory" to the biggest scandal of the century. Elena, who had tried to flee the country, was intercepted at the airport, her cooperation bought in exchange for a plea deal that would keep her away from Mia forever.

As the authorities led the executives out in handcuffs, Mia turned to Leo. "It’s over, isn't it?"

"It’s over," Leo agreed. But as he looked at her, he realized that the fight had never been about winning. It had been about reclaiming the pieces of themselves they had been forced to leave behind.
