Chapter 4

Chapter 5: The Sunrise

One year later.

The city was different now. The scandal had led to a massive overhaul in tech ethics laws, and the support foundation that Leo and Mia had started was helping dozens of other "survivors" of various corporate experiments find their way back to normal lives.

Mia was standing in a small gallery, looking at a painting she had created. It depicted a summer house, but instead of the dark, looming prison Leo remembered, it was bathed in warm, golden light. It was a scene of healing.

Leo walked up behind her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. He wore no dog tag now, and his sleeve was rolled down, hiding the scar on his arm. He didn't need the mark to remember who he was anymore.

"It looks peaceful," he said softly.

"It is," she replied, turning to smile at him. It was a genuine, radiant smile—the kind that had been stolen from her so long ago. "We made it, Leo. We didn't just survive; we started over."

They walked out of the gallery into the crisp afternoon air. The world was still complicated, and the ghosts of their past would likely linger for a lifetime, but the fear was gone. They were no longer victims or subjects. They were simply two people, walking down a busy street, choosing their own path in a world that no longer had the power to define them.

As the sun set behind the skyscrapers, casting long shadows across the pavement, Leo looked at the people around them. He saw a couple laughing, a child running, and a businessperson checking their watch. For the first time, he didn't see threats or secrets. He saw life—messy, beautiful, and finally, entirely their own.
