Chapter 11 - THE MESSAGE The laptop began recording.
Claire appeared on screen.
Her hair was streaked with gray.
But her eyes were the same.
“Ethan.”
He stepped closer.
“If you're watching this, it means Daniel found you.”
Daniel stared.
Claire continued.
“I know what you think.”
“I know you think I abandoned you.”
Ethan's face crumpled.
“I didn't.”
Claire explained that she had gone into hiding to protect him.
Every card.
Every message.
Every anonymous payment.
Had been her.
“I needed you to become strong enough to know the truth.”
Then she looked directly at the camera.
“Daniel will tell you about Emily.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Claire's voice softened.
“She didn't die.”
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“She was taken.”
The screen went black.
Then one final sentence appeared.
COME TO BLACKWATER. ALONE.
Daniel stared.
Ethan shook his head.
“It's a trap.”
“Yes.”
“Then we don't go.”
Daniel looked at him.
“We do.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire wants me there.”
“And Emily.”
