Chapter 10 - THE DEAD MAN Daniel and Ethan escaped through a maintenance tunnel.
Daniel was breathing heavily.
Ethan looked at him.
“You saw him.”
“Yes.”
“He's alive.”
“Yes.”
“You said he died.”
“I was wrong.”
Daniel stopped.
“No.”
He looked toward the darkness.
“I wasn't wrong.”
Ethan stared.
Daniel finally understood.
The man wasn't the original.
He was a copy.
A replacement.
Argent used people who looked similar, used false identities, erased records.
Ethan's face went pale.
“They can make anyone disappear.”
Daniel nodded.
“And replace them.”
They reached an old service room.
Inside, Ethan found a laptop.
It contained one file.
CLAIRE COLE — STATUS: ACTIVE.
Ethan began to cry.
Daniel looked away.
Then another file opened automatically.
EMILY MERCER — STATUS: NOT DECEASED.
Daniel froze.
“No.”
The screen showed a photograph.
Emily.
Alive.
Older.
Standing beside Claire.
Daniel's knees almost gave out.
Ethan whispered:
“Your daughter is alive.”
Daniel stared at the screen.

For twelve years, he had mourned a ghost.
Now the ghost was calling him home.
