CHAPTER 4 : SECRETS OF THE INNER CIRCLE

By dawn, the news had exploded across every major news network and financial headline across the country. “FALL OF A BILLIONAIRE: Julian Vance Arrested in Massive Insurance Fraud and Assault Sting Led by Undercover Federal Prosecutor.” The footage of Victoria snatching the sapphire necklace, framing an innocent child, and Julian’s violent, arrogant outburst played on an endless loop across cable news.

Inside the federal detention center across town, the reality of their new existence was setting in with terrifying speed.

Julian sat on the edge of a cold, bolted metal bunk in a high-security holding cell, staring blankly at the gray cinder-block wall. The silence was deafening. No personal assistants rushed to his side with fresh coffee. No sycophantic board members bowed when he entered the room. His multi-billion-dollar portfolio was locked tight under federal receivership, his assets frozen, and his name dragged through the absolute mud of public humiliation.

The heavy steel door of the adjacent interrogation room clanked open, and Victoria was shoved inside by a female guard. Her makeup was completely ruined, her hair matted, and her designer gold dress looked like a discarded rag. She slammed her fists against the metal table, sobbing hysterically.

"You have to get me out of here, Julian!" Victoria screamed through the reinforced glass partition separating their holding stalls. "Tell your lawyers to post bail! I can't stay in this filthy place!"

Julian slowly stood up, walking toward the glass. His eyes were no longer those of a confident titan of industry; they were cold, dead pools of venomous rage. He slammed his palm against the glass, making Victoria jump.

"Get you out?" Julian hissed, his voice raspy and shaking with pure fury. "You are the reason I am in here, Victoria! If you hadn't stolen that damn necklace to pay off your pathetic gambling debts—if you hadn't framed a child and forced me into the spotlight—none of this would have happened!"

"Me?!" Victoria shrieked back, her own desperation curdling into white-hot hatred. "You knew about the debts, Julian! You told me to find a way to get liquid cash before the board audit! I took the fall for your corporate fraud scheme, and you let me take the heat when it went south! You threw me under the bus the second Evelyn spoke her name!"

"Shut up! Just shut your mouth!" Julian roared, kicking the metal frame of the cell door until guards rushed over with batons drawn, commanding him to step back.

The illusion of their high-society romance had evaporated into thin air, leaving behind two bitter, cornered criminals tearing each other apart. Outside their cells, the federal prosecutors were methodically building an unassailable case. Every deleted email, every hidden offshore ledger, and every fraudulent insurance claim was being cataloged and tied directly to their names.

Meanwhile, miles away in her newly secured, sunlit estate, Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her study, drinking a cup of hot coffee. Lily was downstairs in the sunroom, happily building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks with her nanny, laughing without a single care in the world.

Marcus stepped into the study, holding a fresh batch of case files. "The defense lawyers tried to file an emergency motion for bail this morning," Marcus announced, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "The judge threw it out before they even finished their opening sentence. Flight risk, massive offshore assets, and violent tendencies. They are staying put until trial."

Evelyn turned away from the window, her gaze sharp and resolute. "Good. Let them stew in the consequences of their own arrogance. How is the asset liquidation proceeding?"

"Faster than anticipated," Marcus replied, sliding a financial summary across the desk. "Because Julian's empire was built on fraudulent shell companies, the courts are moving to distribute the seized restitution funds immediately. A significant portion has been allocated to establish the Children’s Safety and Legal Defense Fund—just like you requested."

Evelyn looked down at the documents, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over her soul. The system that had allowed powerful men to trample on the vulnerable for generations was finally being used to protect them.
