Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH WITHOUT AN AUDIENCEWeeks passed.

There were no more messages.
No threats.
No appearances.
No social-media attacks.
Then Dad called.
"Lauren contacted me."
My stomach tightened.
"What does she want?"
"She says she's in counseling."
I remained silent.
"She says she finally understands what she did."
"Does she want something?"
"She says no."
That answer surprised me.
Dad continued.
"She sent back the rest of the things she had taken from your parents' house."
"Everything?"
"Everything."
There was a pause.
"She also sent a letter."
I didn't want it.
Then again, perhaps I did.
The letter arrived two days later.
It was six pages.
Lauren didn't excuse the slap.
She didn't blame Mom.
She didn't blame James.
She wrote about jealousy.
About resentment.
About feeling like Claire had become the "good daughter" while Lauren was always the disaster everyone expected.
But the most important sentence wasn't about her pain.
It was this:
None of those feelings gave me permission to hurt Emma.
I read that line several times.
It wasn't forgiveness.
It wasn't reconciliation.
But it was accountability.
I put the letter away.
Months later, I wrote one sentence back.
I hope you become someone Emma would be safe around.
Nothing more.
No promise.
No invitation.
May you like
No hatred.
Just a boundary with a little light behind it.
