Chapter 20 - THE DOOR WE DIDN'T CLOSE FOREVERThat night, after everyone left, snow began falling outside.

Emma was asleep upstairs.
James stood beside the fireplace.
The red stocking hung above us.
He slipped an arm around my waist.
"You ever think about that night?"
"Every Christmas."
"Does it still hurt?"
I thought about Lauren's hand.
Emma's scream.
Mom looking at her plate.
Dad unable to speak.
James standing.
The door opening.
Our family breaking apart.
Then I thought about everything that came afterward.
The truth.
The boundaries.
The healing.
The little girl sleeping upstairs.
"I think it changed me," I said.
James nodded.
"Me too."
I looked at him.
"Would you do it again?"
He smiled.
"Stand up?"
"Yes."
He looked toward the staircase.
"For her?"
"Yes."
His answer was immediate.
"Every time."
I laughed softly.
Then the doorbell rang.
We both froze.
It was almost midnight.
James looked at the security monitor.
A figure stood beyond the gate.
Not Mom.
Not Dad.
A woman in a dark coat.
She didn't approach the house.
She simply stood beneath the falling snow.
Then she turned and walked away.
The camera caught her face for only two seconds.
Lauren.
I stared at the screen.
James reached for my hand.
"Do you want me to call someone?"
I shook my head.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
I watched Lauren disappear into the darkness.
"I don't know."
And that was the truth.
I didn't know whether she would ever become someone we could trust.
I didn't know whether forgiveness would someday be possible.
I didn't know whether the door to our family should ever open completely again.
But I knew one thing.
It was no longer my job to save everyone.
My job was to protect the people I loved.
Emma.
James.
Our home.
And myself.
I turned off the monitor.
Then I looked at the red stocking above the fireplace.
A year earlier, it had represented everything we had lost.
Now it represented something else.
A child who had survived.
A family that had finally learned the difference between loyalty and love.
And a future that belonged to us.
I took James's hand.
We walked upstairs together.
Behind us, the fire continued to burn.
Outside, snow covered the footprints Lauren had left behind.
By morning, they would be gone.
May you like
But somewhere beyond the edge of our little world, another chapter was still waiting to be written.
And this time, whatever happened next, we would choose when the door opened.
