Chapter 19 - CHRISTMAS AGAINThe following Christmas, our house was full.

Not crowded.

Full.

There was a difference.

Dad arrived first.

Mom came twenty minutes later.

They were no longer pretending everything was normal.

They had accepted that the old family was gone.

Something healthier had taken its place.

Emma was now almost two.

She ran between the Christmas tree and the fireplace carrying a wooden spoon.

James pretended to be terrified.

"She's armed."

Emma laughed.

Dad laughed.

Even Mom smiled.

Then Emma walked toward the fireplace.

She pointed.

"My stocking."

Mom looked at me.

I nodded.

Emma reached for the red stocking.

Mom helped her hang it.

Neither of us said Lauren's name.

We didn't have to.

Some memories lose their power when they stop controlling the present.

Later, Mom sat on the rug while Emma showed her a wooden puzzle.

Mom looked at me.

"I don't deserve this."

I sat beside her.

"Maybe not."

Her eyes filled.

"But you're here."

I looked at Emma.

"Because you're finally respecting what I need."

Mom nodded.

That was the real apology.

Not words.

Behavior.

James came into the room carrying three mugs of hot chocolate.

He looked at the tree.

Then at me.

"You okay?"

I smiled.

"Yeah."

He leaned closer.

"Really?"

I looked around the room.

At Dad.

At Mom.

At Emma.

At the little red stocking.

At the life we had built after everything tried to destroy it.

"Really."

May you like

For the first time in years, Christmas didn't feel like something I had to survive.

It felt like something I was allowed to enjoy.
