Chapter 7 - THE VISITThe investigator introduced herself as Dana Brooks.
She was professional, direct, and exhausted-looking.
"We received a report concerning possible emotional instability in the home and unsafe handling of an infant."
My stomach turned.
James stepped aside.
"Come in."
Dana observed Emma.
She asked about feeding.
Sleep.
Medical care.
Our support system.
Then she asked what happened at Christmas.
I told her everything.
James showed her Megan's recording.
Dana watched once.
Then again.
Her expression barely changed.
She requested a copy.
We also gave her Dad's statement, the social-media posts, and the video from my parents' guest room.
After nearly an hour, Dana closed her folder.
"I cannot discuss who made the report."
"I know who did."
"Maybe."
She paused.
"But based on what I've observed today, I do not have immediate concerns about Emma's safety in this home."
I nearly cried from relief.
Dana continued:
"I do have concerns about the adult shown striking her."
After she left, I sat on the stairs.
James sat beside me.
"She tried to turn us into the problem."
"And failed."
"This time."
My phone rang.
Dad.
"Your mother is packing."
"For where?"
"She says she's coming to your house."
"No."
"Claire, she's hysterical."
"Then stop her."
Dad hesitated.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"Lauren came here this morning."
"Why?"
"They fought."
"About what?"
"Money."
My stomach tightened.
"What money?"
Dad's voice dropped.
"Your mother has been paying Lauren's rent for almost a year."
Then he said something that changed everything.
"Lauren told her that if she stopped defending her, she'd tell you what your mother did with Emma's college account."
I froze.
"Emma doesn't have a college account with Mom."
