Chapter 1 - The Strike of Tyranny

The afternoon sun burned over the Vance estate like a spotlight.
Everything about the mansion was designed to impress.
White marble stretched from the main house to the infinity pool. Palm trees swayed along the cliffside. Crystal glasses glittered beneath strings of golden lanterns, while expensive cars filled the circular driveway.
It was supposed to be a celebration.
Instead, it became the beginning of the end.
Mia Vance stood near the edge of the pool, one trembling hand pressed against her eight-month pregnant belly.
She had come to the estate believing she could finally make peace with the woman who had ruled the family for decades.
She had been wrong.
Eleanor Vance stood three feet away.
Her silver hair was perfectly arranged. Her designer dress remained spotless. But the expression in her eyes was something far colder than anger.
It was ownership.
"You were told never to come back," Eleanor said.
Mia swallowed.
"I'm family."
Eleanor's lips curled.
"Family doesn't disobey me."
Several guests lowered their eyes.
Nobody intervened.
They had all seen Eleanor destroy people before.
Mia looked around desperately.
"Where is Daniel?"
"Your husband isn't here to save you."
Eleanor reached for the baseball bat leaning against a marble column.
Mia's face went white.
"Eleanor, please."
The older woman lifted the bat.
"You thought coming back would give you power?"
Mia instinctively covered her stomach.
The bat came down.
The impact sent Mia crashing onto the marble.
Her scream tore across the courtyard.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then—
BOOM.
A V8 engine roared outside the gates.
Another followed.
BOOM. BOOM.
Two matte-black Hummers stormed through the private entrance.
Their tires screamed across the stone.
The party guests turned.
Doors opened simultaneously.
Men and women in black tactical gear emerged with military precision.
Then the lead vehicle's rear door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Victoria Thorne.
Eleanor froze.
For the first time in decades, the most feared woman in the Vance family looked genuinely afraid.
Victoria stared across the courtyard.
Her eyes found Mia.
Then the blood.
Then the baseball bat.
Something inside her went completely still.
She walked forward.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Nobody dared breathe.
"Eleanor."
The name sounded like a verdict.
Eleanor dropped the bat.
It struck the marble with a metallic crack.
Victoria stopped inches away from her.
"How long," she whispered, "have you been hurting my sister?"
Eleanor opened her mouth.
No words came.
Victoria pushed past her.
She dropped beside Mia.
"Mia."
The younger woman opened her eyes.
"Vic..."
"I'm here."
Mia began crying.
"I was scared."
Victoria took her hand.
"You don't have to be scared anymore."
Behind them, sirens began to rise in the distance.
And Eleanor finally understood.
May you like
The girl she had spent decades trying to control had returned as a woman powerful enough to destroy everything she had built.
