Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Left

Victoria remembered the last night she had lived in the Vance mansion.
She had been twenty-three.
Mia had been sixteen.
Their mother was already gone.
Eleanor controlled every bank account.
Every phone call.
Every decision.
When Victoria announced she was leaving, Eleanor had laughed.
"You'll come crawling back."
Victoria packed one suitcase.
"I'd rather sleep on a sidewalk."
Eleanor slapped her.
Mia had watched from the staircase.
Victoria never forgot the look on her little sister's face.
Fear.
But also hope.
Victoria had walked out that night.
She never came back.
Instead, she built Thorne Global from nothing.
A small consulting firm became a multinational corporation.
She became wealthy beyond anything Eleanor could control.
But there was always one thing she couldn't buy.
Mia's freedom.
Because every time Victoria tried to take her sister away, Eleanor threatened consequences.
Scholarships disappeared.
Trust funds vanished.
Friends were fired.
And eventually Mia stopped asking for help.
Victoria had mistaken silence for acceptance.
Now she understood.
Silence had been survival.
She sat beside Mia's hospital bed.
When Mia woke, she whispered:
"Do you remember what Mom used to say?"
Victoria looked at her.
"She said the truth always survives."
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
"Eleanor said Mom abandoned us."
Victoria's face tightened.
"Did you believe her?"
"For years."
Victoria reached for her hand.
"I didn't."
Mia stared at her.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Victoria had no answer.
That was the first wound she knew she couldn't buy, threaten, or destroy.
She could only admit it.
"I was afraid."
Mia squeezed her hand.
"Of Eleanor?"
Victoria shook her head.
May you like
"Of becoming like her."
