CHAPTER 3 : THE AFTERMATH OF THE STORM

CHAPTER 3 : THE AFTERMATH OF THE STORM
The sterile, rhythmic hum of the fetal heart monitor filled the dimly lit hospital room, casting a fragile blanket of peace over the chaos that had just unfolded. Lucas Vance sat in a hard plastic chair beside the hospital bed, his elbows resting on his knees, his hands clasped so tightly together that his knuckles were stark white. He had not slept, nor had he even bothered to wash the faint streaks of dust and blood from his tailored suit cuffs. His entire universe was currently contained within the four walls of this intensive care recovery suite.

On the bed, Elena stirred softly. Her pale face, framed by a halo of dark, exhausted curls, caught the faint amber glow of the morning sun creeping through the horizontal blinds. She let out a small, jagged breath, her hands instinctively moving to shield her rounded belly.
"I'm here, my love," Lucas whispered, instantly rising from his chair. He gently enveloped her trembling hands in his own, pressing a warm, lingering kiss to her knuckles. "You're safe. We are all safe."
Elena’s eyelids fluttered open, revealing soft brown eyes heavy with the remnants of fear and sedatives. "Lucas... the baby... Vanessa..."
"Shh," Lucas soothed, his voice a steady, immovable anchor. "The baby is perfectly fine. The doctors said you experienced a minor placental shock, but her heartbeat is strong and steady. And Vanessa? She is currently sitting in a federal holding cell without bail. She will never, ever come within a hundred miles of our family again. I swear it on my life."
Tears welled in Elena’s eyes, spilling over her lashes and soaking into the crisp white pillowcase. The sheer, overwhelming relief washed the remaining terror from her body. "She looked at me with such pure hatred, Lucas. She said I was stealing what belonged to her. Why? Why would she do something so unspeakably evil?"
Lucas’s jaw clenched, a dangerous, cold fire igniting in his eyes. Vanessa was his late father’s protégé, a woman who had been treated like family, funded by the Vance estate, and trusted with the keys to their corporate kingdom. Her jealousy over Lucas’s marriage to Elena—and the subsequent pregnancy that secured the family bloodline—had festered into a toxic, murderous obsession.
"She was blinded by a toxic combination of greed and entitlement," Lucas explained, his voice dropping an octave. "She thought that if she could eliminate you, and our child, she could force me to sign over the Vanguard Tech assets to her shell corporations in a moment of grief. She wasn't just acting out of jealousy, Elena. This was a calculated, premeditated assassination attempt."
Elena gasped softly, the chilling reality of Vanessa's absolute depravity sinking in.
Before they could speak further, the heavy wooden door of the suite clicked open. Marcus, the head of Vance estate security, stepped inside, his broad shoulders filling the doorway. He offered a respectful, solemn nod to Elena before turning his grave attention to his employer.
"Mr. Vance," Marcus said quietly, clutching a sealed legal dossier. "The district attorney has processed the digital footage from your foyer. Attempted murder, aggravated assault, and corporate espionage. But during the raid on Vanessa's private penthouse, my cyber-team uncovered something far more disturbing. She didn't act alone."

Lucas gently placed Elena’s hand on the mattress, his protective instincts flaring into high alert. "What did you find, Marcus?"
"Bank records, sir," Marcus replied grimly. "Massive offshore wire transfers routed through the Cayman Islands, deposited directly into Vanessa's accounts just three hours before she arrived at the estate. The money came from Richard Sterling."

Elena’s breath hitched. Richard Sterling was the ruthless CEO of Apex Global, the Vance family’s biggest corporate rival.
"Sterling," Lucas growled, a predatory calmness washing over him as he realized the true scale of the war they were in. He looked back at his wife, his gaze softening into absolute, unwavering devotion. "Rest, my love. I have to make a few calls. The people who tried to destroy our family are about to learn what happens when you wake a sleeping dragon."
