CHAPTER 4 : THE SYNDICATE'S SHADOW

CHAPTER 4 : THE SYNDICATE'S SHADOW

The sprawling skyline of the city glittered under the harsh midday sun, but inside the glass-walled executive boardroom of Vance Industries, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth. Lucas sat at the head of the long obsidian table, flanked by a small army of elite corporate lawyers, forensic accountants, and private investigators.

Spread out across the digital smart-board was a complex, undeniable web of corruption. Red lines connected Vanessa’s face to Richard Sterling, linking them through a labyrinth of shell companies, fake charities, and offshore routing numbers.

"Sterling wanted our new clean-energy patents," Lucas's lead attorney, a sharp, unyielding woman named Sarah Jenkins, stated as she tapped the screen. "Vance Industries refused his buyout offer three times. So, he found a weak link in your inner circle. He leveraged Vanessa’s jealousy and funded her lifestyle, manipulating her into doing his dirty work."

"He weaponized a desperate woman," Lucas stated coldly, leaning forward in his leather chair. "He thought if Elena and my unborn child were out of the picture, my grief would paralyze the company, allowing Apex Global to initiate a hostile takeover."

"Precisely," Sarah nodded. "But Vanessa failed. And now, she is a massive liability to Sterling. We have intel suggesting that Apex Global's legal fixers are already trying to reach Vanessa in the county detention center. If they get to her, they will offer her a massive payout to take the fall alone and keep Sterling’s name out of the depositions."

Lucas stood up, pacing the length of the boardroom. The thought of the man who had ordered a hit on his pregnant wife walking away scot-free made his blood boil. He wasn't just fighting for his company anymore; he was fighting for the very soul and safety of his family.

"We don't let them get to her," Lucas commanded, his eyes flashing with tactical brilliance. "Sarah, I want you to go to the district attorney. Offer the Vance legal team's full cooperation. But more importantly, I want you to visit Vanessa in holding before Sterling's people do."

"And what exactly do you want me to tell the woman who tried to end your wife's life?" Sarah asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Tell her the absolute truth," Lucas replied, his voice dripping with icy certainty. "Tell her that Sterling is already liquidating the shell accounts he used to pay her. Tell her that the moment she is convicted, Apex Global will discard her like trash. Show her the financial transfers we intercepted. Make her realize that she is the sacrificial lamb."

Sarah smirked, closing her leather folio with a satisfying snap. "You want to flip her."

"I want her to realize that her only chance of surviving the federal penitentiary is to hand me Richard Sterling’s head on a silver platter," Lucas said.

Later that evening, Lucas returned to the hospital. The heavy security detail in the corridor parted respectfully as he approached Elena's room. When he stepped inside, the harshness of the corporate warfare instantly melted away. Elena was sitting up in bed, surrounded by vibrant bouquets of white roses and soft ambient lighting, reading a book on motherhood.

"How are my two favorite girls?" Lucas asked softly, walking over to press a lingering kiss to Elena's forehead, his hand resting gently over her swollen stomach.

"We missed you," Elena smiled, her natural radiance completely restored. "The doctors say I can go home tomorrow, as long as I stay on strict bed rest. I want to go home, Lucas. I want to sleep in our bed."

"You will," Lucas promised, holding her close. "The estate is completely secure. And the monsters who tried to take our future? Their empire is about to burn to the ground."
