CHAPTER 5 : THE TRIAL OF DECEIT

CHAPTER 5 : THE TRIAL OF DECEIT
Three months had passed since the horrific incident in the foyer. Elena’s pregnancy had blossomed beautifully, bringing an undeniable light and joyous anticipation into the Vance estate. Yet, the final ghost of their past still needed to be exorcised within the cold, wood-paneled walls of the federal courthouse.

The courtroom was packed to the brim with national media, corporate elites, and curious onlookers. The trial of Vanessa and Richard Sterling had become the scandal of the decade. Thanks to Lucas's brilliant psychological maneuver, Vanessa had completely folded. Realizing Sterling had betrayed her, she had turned state's evidence, testifying against the billionaire tycoon in a desperate bid to reduce her own inevitable sentence.
Richard Sterling sat at the defense table, his arrogant posture completely shattered. His expensive tailored suit hung loosely on his frame, his face pale and drawn.
Sarah Jenkins stood at the prosecutor’s podium, her voice ringing out with crystal-clear authority as she addressed the jury.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the defense wants you to believe that Richard Sterling is simply a victim of a disgruntled employee's false accusations," Sarah stated, pacing slowly in front of the jury box. "They want you to believe that a billionaire CEO had absolutely no knowledge that his funds were being used to orchestrate an assassination attempt on a pregnant woman."
She paused, pointing directly at the massive monitor in the center of the room. "But the digital footprint does not lie. And neither does the audio."
Sarah pressed a button on her remote. The courtroom fell dead silent as an encrypted voicemail, recovered from Sterling's private server, began to play.
"Vanessa, the wire transfer is complete. I don't care how you do it, just ensure the Vance heir does not take a breath. Make it look like an accident. Once she is gone, Lucas will break, and Vanguard Tech is ours. Do not fail me."
The sound of Sterling’s cold, calculated voice echoing through the courtroom was the final nail in the coffin. A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Sterling closed his eyes, his head dropping into his hands as his high-priced defense attorneys completely stopped taking notes. It was an absolute, unmitigated checkmate.
Lucas sat in the front row of the gallery, his hand securely holding Elena’s. She looked breathtakingly beautiful in a simple, elegant navy dress, her strength shining brightly for the entire world to see. She didn't look at Sterling or Vanessa with anger; she looked at them with profound pity. They had sacrificed their humanity for wealth, and now they had absolutely nothing.

The judge slammed his gavel, demanding order.
"The evidence is insurmountable," the judge declared, his stern gaze fixing upon the defendants. "Richard Sterling, you are a disgrace to the corporate world and a danger to society. I am denying bail and remanding you to federal custody pending sentencing. Vanessa, your cooperation is noted, but it does not erase your vile actions. Both of you will face the absolute maximum penalties allowed by law."
As the bailiffs clamped heavy steel handcuffs onto Richard Sterling's wrists and dragged him out of the courtroom, Lucas let out a long, shuddering breath. The war was officially over. The dark syndicate that had threatened to tear his family apart was dismantled, their assets frozen, and their freedom permanently revoked.

"It's over," Elena whispered, tears of joy and closure shimmering in her beautiful brown eyes. She leaned her head against Lucas’s shoulder.
"Yes, it is," Lucas smiled, kissing the top of her head. "Now, we can finally focus on the only thing that truly matters."
