Chapter 16 - THE TREE BY THE RIVER On the anniversary of Rachel's death, they planted a tree beside the river.

The wind was cold.

The sky was gray.

But the children insisted on doing it themselves.

Ethan dug the first hole.

Lily placed the small tree inside.

Michael covered the roots with soil.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lily took the old wooden hanger from a box.

Ethan frowned.

“Why did you keep that?”

Lily placed it beneath the tree.

“So we remember.”

Michael looked at her.

“Remember what?”

“That being family doesn't mean you get to hurt people.”

Ethan nodded.

“And being scared doesn't mean you're weak.”

Michael knelt.

He pulled them both close.

For years, he had believed protecting his children meant building walls.

Hiring security.

Buying bigger houses.

Working harder.

Making more money.

Now he understood.

Protection was attention.

It was listening.

It was believing a child when her voice was barely louder than a whisper.

That night, Michael returned home and found a small envelope on the kitchen counter.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a photograph.

Rachel.

Standing beside the river.

Alive.

Michael's heart stopped.

On the back, someone had written:

There are still things you don't know about the night Rachel died.

Michael stared at the photograph.

His first instinct was fear.

His second was anger.

His third was to hide it.

Then Lily entered.

“Daddy?”

Michael turned.

She looked at the photograph.

“Who's that?”

He slowly lowered it.

“Your mom.”

Lily smiled.

“She looks happy.”

Michael nodded.

“She was.”

He didn't tell her about the message.

Not yet.

Because he had promised himself something.

No more secrets.

But there was a difference between protecting a child and hiding the truth from one.

He would tell her when she was ready.

For now, he placed the photograph in the drawer.

Then he locked it.

May you like

Not because he was afraid.

Because he needed time.
