Chapter 17 - WHAT RACHEL LEFT BEHIND Weeks passed.

Michael tried to return to ordinary life.

He failed.

The photograph haunted him.

Who had taken it?

Why had it been hidden?

Why had someone waited a year to send it?

He contacted Robert.

Robert studied the image.

“I've seen this location.”

“Where?”

“Near the old river warehouse.”

Michael's stomach tightened.

The same place Vanessa had used.

Robert enlarged the photograph.

Something appeared in the background.

A red truck.

A man standing beside it.

Michael leaned closer.

“That’s Henry.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

Michael looked again.

Robert pointed.

“Look at the face.”

Michael's blood chilled.

It wasn't Henry.

It was a man Michael didn't recognize.

Someone else had been there.

Someone else had witnessed Rachel's final night.

Detective Monroe reopened the file quietly.

The investigation revealed something unexpected.

The truck belonged to a private transportation company.

Its driver had disappeared two days after Rachel's death.

His name was Samuel Reed.

Michael found the name in old financial records.

Samuel had been paid by Blackwood Holdings.

But not by Vanessa.

By an account that belonged to someone else.

Rachel.

Michael stared at the transaction.

“Why would Rachel pay him?”

Robert looked troubled.

“Maybe she was planning something.”

“What?”

“We don't know.”

Michael sat back.

For the first time, he considered the possibility that Rachel's final plan had been larger than the investigation into Blackwood Holdings.

Maybe she hadn't simply been trying to expose Vanessa.

Maybe she had been trying to protect something.

Something even Michael didn't know about.

That night, another envelope arrived.

This one contained a handwritten note.

Samuel Reed is alive.

Michael read it twice.

Then a final sentence:
