Instead, he forced himself to breathe.
“Where is my son?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
The screen changed.
Ethan sat in a dark room.
“Dad?”
Michael stepped forward.
“I’m here.”
A gloved hand grabbed Ethan's shoulder.
Lily screamed.
Vanessa leaned into the camera.
“One hour.”
The screen went black.
Robert opened Rachel's letter.
Inside was a message written in her handwriting.
If they take one child, they will use your love to control you.
Michael swallowed.
Do not trade the evidence.
Make copies.
Trust Daniel.
Then another line:
Remember Ethan's blue watch.
Daniel immediately checked the tracking system.
A signal appeared.
Hudson River.
“We have him.”
Michael copied the evidence three times.
One copy went to the district attorney.
One went to secure storage.
One stayed with him.
Then Lily grabbed his hand.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“She'll listen to me.”
“Absolutely not.”
Lily looked at the dark screen.
“She told Ethan I was the reason Mommy died.”
Michael froze.
“She said what?”
Lily's voice hardened.
“I want him to hear the truth.”
Before Michael could answer, Daniel's screen flashed.
The signal had stopped.
