Chapter 1 - THE FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARKThe Blackwood mansion had never been silent.

Even at two seventeen in the morning, the enormous estate breathed with the sounds of wealth and power—distant footsteps, elevator cables humming behind marble walls, rain ticking against windows taller than most houses, security radios whispering beneath the floor.

But that night, the silence came anyway.

Lily Carter lay on the cold marble foyer, one arm wrapped protectively around her ribs.

Her body hurt.

Her pride hurt more.

And three feet away, fourteen-month-old Ethan Blackwood was crying beside the staircase.

His tiny arm was twisted awkwardly against his chest.

Serena Montigue stood over him.

The elegant ivory dress she had worn for Victor Blackwood's engagement celebration was stained at the hem. Her hair was perfect. Her makeup was untouched.

Only her eyes revealed the truth.

They were furious.

She lifted her foot again.

Lily screamed.

"Don't!"

Serena's heel stopped inches above Ethan.

Then came the footsteps.

One.

Then another.

Slow.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Serena froze.

Every guard in the mansion knew that rhythm.

Victor Blackwood.

He appeared at the end of the corridor wearing a charcoal overcoat, rain darkening his shoulders. His face was expressionless.

His eyes were not.

They went immediately to Ethan.

Then to Lily.

Then to Serena's raised foot.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Victor crossed the foyer.

He dropped beside his son.

The most feared man in Chicago touched Ethan's cheek with trembling fingers.

"Ethan."

The baby whimpered.

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Call Dr. Hale."

Nobody moved quickly enough.

Victor looked up.

"Now."

Two guards ran.

Serena recovered.

"Victor, thank God."

He ignored her.

She pointed at Lily.

"She attacked him."

Lily stared at her in disbelief.

"What?"

"She was dragging Ethan down the stairs."

"That's a lie."

Serena's voice broke perfectly.

"I came in and found her hurting him."

Victor finally looked at her.

"Then why was your shoe on Lily's stomach?"

Serena swallowed.

"She attacked me first."

Lily pushed herself upright.

"She pulled Ethan from the nursery."

Victor's eyes moved toward her.

Lily's voice shook.

"She dragged him by the wrist because he wouldn't stop crying."

Serena's face hardened.

"You miserable liar."

"His head hit the third step."

Victor said nothing.

"She told him his mother was dead."

Serena's expression changed.

Lily continued.

"She said weak women always die."

Victor rose.

His voice was almost soft.

"Don't speak to her again."

Serena stared.

"Victor—"

"I said don't."

Dr. Miriam Hale arrived moments later.

She examined Ethan and immediately called for an ambulance.

"Possible shoulder dislocation. Maybe a fracture."

Victor looked at Lily.

She was bleeding beneath her dress.

"And her?"

Dr. Hale examined Lily's ribs.

"Cracked rib. Significant abdominal bruising."

Serena stepped toward Victor.

"Let me go with Ethan."

"No."

"But I'm going to be his stepmother."

Victor looked at the guards.

"Take Miss Montigue to the east sitting room."

Serena's face collapsed.

"You can't imprison me because a nanny accused me!"

Victor watched the paramedics lift Ethan.

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"I'm keeping you where I can find you."

As Lily was helped to her feet, Victor stopped beside her.

"Tell me everything."

"I will."

"Every word."

Lily looked directly into his eyes.

"If I lie, Ethan may die."

Something changed inside Victor.

Only for a second.

But Lily saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

And she understood that the man everyone called a monster had finally realized something terrifying.

The enemy was not outside his house.

It was already inside.
