Chapter 14 - The Docks at Midnight
Chaos erupted across the rain-swept pier.
The struck mercenary collapsed with a agonizing scream. Before the others could react, Mark drew his firearm, firing two precision shots that dropped the second guard into the dark water below.
Viktor grabbed Lily by the shoulder, raising his sidearm toward Mark, but Elena tackled Viktor from behind with ferocious maternal fury, driving them both to the wooden deck. Lily broke free, running through the gunfire toward her father.
"Lily! Run!" Mark screamed, scooping his daughter into his arms and shoving her behind the heavy steel frame of a shipping container.
Julian lunged forward, snatching the dropped flash drive from the rain-slicked deck, scrambling toward his waiting speedboat docked at the edge of the pier.
"Mark! He's getting away with the evidence!" Elena yelled, fighting off Viktor’s grip as they wrestled across the slippery wood.
Mark sprinted toward the docked speedboat, firing his remaining rounds into the vessel's outboard engine. Sparks flew as bullets punctured the fuel line, igniting a sudden fireball that blew the stern of the boat into the air.

The explosion knocked Julian backward onto the deck, the flash drive flying from his hand and sliding toward the edge of the pier above the dark, churning river.
Julian scrambled on his hands and knees, reaching desperately for the drive that contained his entire life's secrets and crimes.
