Chapter 5 - Line of Fire

"Vance! Vance!" Mark screamed into the receiver, but only static answered back.
His heart sank into a dark abyss. He slammed his hand against the side of the truck, terror and fury warring inside him. Julian was systematically cutting off every lifeline, erasing every witness, and isolating Mark’s family until they had nowhere left to run.
He climbed back into the driver's seat, forcing his expression into a calm mask so he wouldn't alarm Elena and the girls sleeping in the backseat. He pressed on through the night, navigating winding mountain roads lined with towering pines until the snow-dusted roof of the old log cabin emerged through the fog.
The cabin was frozen and dark, untouched for years. Mark set up a perimeter, securing the heavy wooden shutters and locking the iron deadbolts. He retrieved an old military duffel bag hidden beneath the floorboards—containing a shotgun, two handguns, and boxes of ammunition left behind by his veteran father.
Sitting by the stone fireplace as the wood crackled to life, Elena sat beside him, wrapping a heavy woolen blanket around her shoulders. She looked at the weapons laid out on the wooden table.
"It's come to this, hasn't it?" she asked softly.
Mark loaded a magazine into the semi-automatic pistol, the metallic clack echoing through the silent room. "He took away our peace, Elena. He threatened our children. I'm not waiting for him to strike again."
"Mark... what happened to Detective Vance?"

Mark looked into his wife's eyes, seeing the tragic clarity returning to her mind. "He's gone. Julian had him taken out."
Elena pulled the blanket tighter around herself, her jaw tightening with an unprecedented surge of righteous fury. "Then we don't just hide, Mark. We destroy him."
