Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Contract

In a high-rise penthouse suite overlooking the financial district, Julian Vance stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror, examining the surgical stitches across his bruised jawline. Standing near the door was Viktor, a broad-shouldered man wearing a sharp tactical coat, his eyes devoid of warmth or empathy.

"Mark is taking his family off the grid," Julian said smoothly, dabbing a cotton swab with antiseptic. "He thinks he can hide in the woods like a wounded animal."

"Do you want them brought back, or eliminated?" Viktor’s voice was a low, mechanical rasp.

Julian turned around, a chilling smile spreading across his face. "Elimination is too merciful for Mark. I want him to watch everything he built crumble into ash first. Kill Detective Vance—he knows too much about the synthetic compound. As for Mark’s family... strip away their security, terrify them, and make Mark realize he cannot protect anyone he loves."

Viktor nodded once, reaching into his coat to adjust a silenced sidearm. "Consider Detective Vance handled by tonight."

"And Viktor," Julian added, his tone dripping with sadistic delight. "Make sure the press hears about Vance's death. I want Mark to read the headline and know who is coming for him next."

Meanwhile, fifty miles away at a gas station along the mountain highway, Mark stood in the freezing rain, pumping fuel while monitoring the perimeter. His phone buzzed in his pocket—an encrypted line he had set up with Vance.

"Mark, don't go back to your house or your office," Vance’s hurried voice crackled over the speaker, accompanied by the heavy sound of a vehicle engine. "Julian’s men just raided the precinct's evidence locker. The chemical analysis file is gone. They're scrubbing the record."

"Vance, where are you?" Mark demanded, stepping closer to the truck cab.

"I'm following a lead on the chemist who synthesized the drug," Vance replied. "If I can get him to talk, Julian goes down for good. Keep your family hidden. I'll contact you when—"

A deafening crunch of crushing metal exploded through the phone line, followed by the terrifying sound of shattering glass and screeching tires, then dead silence.
