Chapter 3 - Poisoned Echoes

Returning home felt like stepping back into a Crime Scene. The shattered glass of the patio door had been boarded up with rough plywood, casting long, ugly shadows across the living room carpet. The faint dark stain where Elena’s bat had fallen remained as an agonizing reminder of the trauma.

Maya and Lily clung to Mark’s legs, terrified of entering their own home. Elena froze at the threshold, her breath hitching into ragged gasps as phantom visions of the chemical-induced hallucination flooded her mind.

"I can't... Mark, I can't breathe in here," she choked out, tears welling in her tired eyes.

Mark wrapped his arms around her waist, anchoring her. "Look at me, Elena. Focus on my voice. You are here, you are safe, and you love our daughters. That monster tried to rewrite who you are, but he failed."

He didn't let them stay in the house. Packing quick bags with essential clothes and documents, Mark loaded the family into his truck. They needed a fortress, somewhere offline and beyond the reach of Julian’s corporate surveillance.

They headed north toward his late grandfather's hunting cabin in the dense woods of Upstate New York—a remote refuge completely off the grid. But as Mark checked his rearview mirror while merging onto the interstate, a non-descript gray sedan fell into line four cars behind them.

Mark switched lanes without signaling. The gray sedan mirrored his maneuver instantly.

Julian wasn't just watching them; he was hunting them. Mark pressed his foot firmly down on the gas pedal, engines roaring as the suburban skyline faded into dark, dense forests.
