Chapter 24 - Maren's VoiceSorrel found an old home video of Maren.
She was thirty.
Sewing.
Sorrel, two years old, climbed onto her back.
I was behind the camera.
“She’s ruining your seam.”
Maren laughed.
“She is the seam.”
The metaphor was terrible.
We laughed.
Then Sorrel cried.
“I don't remember her voice right.”
“That's normal.”
“I remember Aurelia's voice better.”
That hurt.
I couldn't change memory.
We didn't try.
Instead, Sorrel watched more videos.
Maren cooking.
Maren swearing at a broken vacuum.
Maren falling asleep with a book.
Maren being ordinary.
Not a saint.
A mother.
Slowly, Aurelia's voice became quieter.
