Chapter 7 - The AccountantHis name was Nolan Price.

Forty-two.
Certified public accountant.
Aurelia's former boyfriend.
He handled bookkeeping for Dane Family Support Services.
The recording was devastating.
Aurelia:
“He'll sign after the wedding.”
Nolan:
“Not if the trust asks him directly.”
“He doesn't read statements.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“It has been so far.”
Then:
“What about guardianship?”
“Temporary first.”
“And after?”
“Permanent if she keeps acting out.”
Nolan laughed nervously.
“You can't make a five-year-old act out on paper.”
Aurelia answered:
“Watch me.”
Nolan eventually admitted his role.
At first, he said, the business was legitimate.
A nanny.
Real childcare.
Real receipts.
Then Aurelia discovered how easily the trust reimbursed expenses.
She inflated them.
Created bundled costs.
Registered her company.
Then came the fake Oak Crest invoices.
Nolan admitted altering templates.
He was not a child abuser.
He was not responsible for the chain.
But he had helped falsify financial records.
He had been paid $72,000.
Investigators recovered his internal spreadsheet.
Actual cost.
Billed.
Reimbursed.
Pending.
Target.
One line stopped me.
RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT — FUTURE ANNUAL BUDGET: $180,000–$240,000.
Comment:
Guardian status required for broader approval.
Another:
HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT — $96,000.
Aurelia intended to pay her own company for “guardian household coordination.”
Then Nolan said something that changed everything.
“She hated Sorrel before the money.”
“Why?”
“She hated that every room still had Maren in it.”
Photographs.
Drawings.
Memories.
Sorrel saying:
“Mommy used to…”
“Mommy liked…”
“Mommy said…”
Aurelia had been trying to compete with a dead woman.
She couldn't.
So she tried to push the child who remembered her beneath her.

The money came later.
Control came first.
