Chapter 25 - Sorrel Becomes a MotherSorrel became a mother at thirty-two.

A daughter.
Lena.
I did not move in.
I did not assume access.
I asked before visiting.
I brought groceries.
I respected boundaries.
One afternoon, Sorrel asked me to watch Lena for three hours.
I looked terrified.
Sorrel noticed.
“What?”
“You're acting like I handed you plutonium.”
“You were abused by a caregiver at five.”
“And you think I forgot?”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“Sorry.”
Lena wanted to help set the table.
Napkins.
Plates.
Then she asked for an apron.
Sorrel froze.
Only for half a second.
I saw it.
Sorrel handed Lena a yellow baking apron.
“Your choice,” she said.
Lena smiled.
She played.
Later, Sorrel told me:
“I heard Aurelia's voice.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
“I let Lena play.”
That was healing.
