Chapter 4 - The Cipher's Secret

By 2:00 AM, the Callahan estate was on maximum lockdown. Private security contractors patrolled the perimeter with attack dogs, while Marcus hooked the metallic flash drive up to an air-gapped, offline computer in the basement command center.

Grant, Emma, and Marcus gathered around the glowing monitor. Lily was upstairs, fast asleep under the watchful eye of two armed guards.

"It’s encrypted with a 256-bit military cipher," Marcus said, monitoring the progress bar on the screen. "It requires a biometric key or a multi-tiered password. But look at the file headers."

Grant leaned over Marcus’s shoulder. The drive contained dozens of audio logs, bank ledgers, and architectural blueprints for a high-security facility located in the Swiss Alps.

"That’s the St. Jude Medical Complex," Emma said suddenly, her voice cutting through the quiet room.

Grant turned to look at her. "How do you know that name?"

Emma hesitated, meeting Grant’s piercing gaze. "Because before I came to work as a private nanny, I was a combat medic attached to a civilian intelligence task force. St. Jude isn't a hospital, Mr. Callahan. It’s a black-site holding facility for high-value targets."

Grant stared at her, the pieces of the puzzle violently shifting in his mind. "Who are you really, Emma?"

Emma took a deep breath, stepping back. "My real name is Emma Vance. I am Clara’s younger half-sister."

Silence fell over the command center like a physical blow. Marcus immediately drew his firearm, training it directly on Emma's chest. "Don't move," Marcus barked.

Grant stood stock-still, his eyes searching Emma's face for any sign of deception. "Explain. Right now."

"Julian Vane is my uncle," Emma said, her voice remaining steady despite the gun pointed at her. "He used Renata to infiltrate your home because he believed Clara gave you the access codes to the Vane vault before she disappeared. I didn't come here to hurt Lily. Clara contacted me three weeks before her plane went down. She knew Julian was coming for her. She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to enter this house, protect Lily, and retrieve what Clara left behind."

"You lied to me," Grant said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You lived under my roof under a fake identity."

"I had to!" Emma insisted, taking a step toward him. "If Julian knew I was alive, he would have killed me before I ever reached Lily. Look at the drive, Grant! Clara didn't die in that plane crash. The blueprints on that drive aren't just for the facility—they're patient transfer logs. Clara was moved to St. Jude three days after the crash was staged!"
